CHENNAI: At least 10 people died after consuming spurious liquor in Kallakurichi district in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday. About 40 people have been rushed to hospital while some among them are said to be in critical condition. From these, 10 people in critical condition have been shifted to JIPMER Pondicherry. One person has been arrested in connection with the incident.

On Tuesday night, the labourers unknowingly bought spurious liquor from some roadside sellers from Karunapuram. These labourers upon reaching their homes endured severe headaches and vomiting. Minding their worsening health, the relatives rushed these labourers to Kallakurichi Medical Hospital and other hospitals in town.

Meanwhile, district collector Shravankumar didn’t confirm the presence of spurious liquor in the death. Three people died at their homes while one died at a hospital due to abdominal pain. Another man went through a seizure. The cause of death will be confirmed only after the results are obtained.

At the same time, BJP Tamil Nadu president K. Annamalai criticized the government in the incident. Annamalai alleged that the DMK minister maintains a close cabal with people making spurious liquor. The BJP leader also demanded the excise minister take responsibility for the tragedy.
