Kerala braces for intensified rains in July; IMD with alert

THIRUVANATHAPURAM: The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rains in Kerala during July. As per the report, Kerala will receive more rain this July than in previous years.

In 2024, rainfall in Kerala was less than 25 per cent compared to previous years. But although the forecast for July is mixed, Kerala may receive more than normal rainfall. The IMD has already warned about rains in major parts of the countries during the peak monsoon season of July.

Kerala mostly received rain with thunder and lightning due to high easterly winds in mid-June. After June 20, the monsoon slowly took shape as a low-pressure depression formed on the Kerala coast began to gain strength.

According to the Meteorological Department observation, the lack of formation of cyclonic vortices/low pressure during this period, along with the absence of the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) phenomenon was responsible for the decrease in rainfall in June.

The ENSO phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) phenomenon in the Indian Ocean are likely to remain neutral during July as well.

With news about stronger rains on the cards in Kerala, the health department has started preparations to deal with monsoon diseases.
