THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Health Minister Veena George has said that a Zika cluster has formed in Anayara here, which includes a private hospital, where Zika cases were first reported in the state. The cluster has been formed within a range of 3 km. However, the health department has advised people not to be overly fearful about the disease and not to give up vigilance.

The Department of Health has formulated a special action plan with the confirmation of the disease in those other than the Anayara area, giving priority to mosquito eradication. The health department has also directed to expedite the cleaning activities. The health department has advised those with symptoms to seek treatment as soon as possible. A special control room has been set up for those with symptoms to call. Arrangements have been made for the tests at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital.

At present, 23 people in the state have been diagnosed with the disease, including a doctor at a private hospital and a 10-month-old baby. Although the mortality rate is low, the disease can lead to genetic disorders in infants. A treatment for the disease is yet to be found.
