Remand prisoner dies in hospital, relatives complain of police torture, falls while playing, say police

THIRUVNANTHAPURAM: A remand prisoner died while undergoing treatment at the medical college hospital. The dead identified as Ajith (37) of Njandoorkonam died last night at 11.30 pm.

The police arrested Ajith along with his team for attacking a youth. The police said there were bruises on his body when he was taken into custody. He was the fifth accused in the case. The police said that he told them that he sustained the injuries in a fall while playing. The police said that this has been mentioned in the custody report also.

Ajith and his aides were taken into custody on Sunday in connection with the attack that happened on Saturday. They were later shifted to the jail. Police said that he suffered physical difficulties in jail and following that was shifted to the medical college hospital.

Meantime, his relatives alleged that he was tortured by cops in the cell which led to his death. A clarity would be obtained only after completing the procedures including the post-mortem.
