KOLLAM: Two police officers were seriously injured when a Popular Front of India (PFI) activist rammed a motorcycle into them. The officers were trying to stop PFI activists from attacking people traveling in vehicles when they were run down by a protester who was trying to escape.

The injured police officers are Senior Civil Police Officer Anthony of Eravipuram Station and CPO, Nikhil of Kollam AR camp.

Anthony underwent immediate surgery, in a private hospital, after receiving a fracture on the bone under his eyes while Nikhil has an injury to his leg following the attack. The police have registered a case against Shamnad, a native of Kutikada, in connection with the incident. The bullet, which was used for the attack is taken into custody.

The incident took place at Pallimuku by 8 am. The officers were returning on a bike from Thatamalayil, where a bus had come under stone pelting. They had reached the spot after getting information that PFI activists were assaulting people traveling in vehicles.

When Shamnad saw a police jeep approaching the spot, he took his bullet and tried to escape. When Anthony and Nikhil tried to stop him, he ran them over and rode away. The police noted the number plate of the bullet and reached Shamnad’s house, however, he was not there. The police took the bullet into custody from his house.

After the police took the vehicle into custody, Shamnad called up the Commissioner and complained that police took his bullet unnecessarily. Though the police began to locate him using the mobile phone tower, Shamnad switched off his phone and escaped.
