THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala is having high hopes with Rishi Sunak, who is in favour of a free trade agreement with India, becoming the British Prime Minister. The state hopes that the recent visit to Britain by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will be fruitful, including in getting more employment opportunities for the Malayalis.
India has been trying for a free trade agreement with Britain for several years. It almost became a reality when Boris Johnson was prime minister. However, the subsequent political changes backfired. If Rishi Sunak, who is in favour of the agreement, makes it a reality, Indian students and job seekers will have more opportunities in Britain. British businessmen will also get more opportunities in India.
Malayalis mostly work in the UK in the healthcare, retail, hotel and IT sectors. Students are also interested in pursuing higher studies in the UK.
After Britain implemented Brexit, workers from Eastern Europe were missing out on opportunities. A feasibility report by National Employment in Britain pointed out that 88.20 lakh jobs will be lost by 2030 due to reforms like artificial intelligence. In this situation, it was estimated that Britain would tighten immigration laws and that would further complicate the economic crisis. However, Sunak will be trying to overcome the financial crisis by implementing new reforms. Relaxation of immigration laws is also expected.
Malayalis in Britain
About 25,000 Malayalis work in Britain in the health sector alone. It is reported that there will be about 42000 jobs in this sector within three years.
