WASHINGTON: Security breach in Signal group chat to discuss US military action against Houthi rebels in Yemen has sparked controversy. Atlantic magazine released the full text of messages exchanged between senior officials in the group regarding the military operation.
The Atlantic's editor-in-chief, Jeffrey Goldberg, revealed on Tuesday that he was mistakenly added to the group by U.S. National Security Advisor Michael Waltz. The group included senior figures such as Vice President J.D. Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
The Atlantic's position was that it would not release more information about the messages due to their confidential nature. Jeffrey had also announced that he had left the group on his own. However, the messages were released in full after the White House responded that Jeffrey was lying.
The messages contain details of US airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen this month. In the released messages, Hegseth shares real-time information about the attack. Hegseth details the timing, target, and conclusions of the attack.
At the same time, the White House, which described Jeffrey as an "anti-Trump hater", responded that the messages were not classified. At the same time, Michael Waltz announced that he takes full responsibility for the incident.
