CANBERRA: An Indian-origin man, who was battling for life after brutally attacked by the Australian police, has died. The dead is 42-year-old Gaurav Kundi of Australia. He died while undergoing treatment at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. He was attacked by the Adelaide police two weeks ago.
Gaurav and his wife Amritpal Kaur had an argument on the road and a police patrol team that came by noticed this and immediately tried to subdue Gaurav. Gaurav was tackled to the ground, with a cop driving a knee into his neck. Gaurav fell unconscious. Amritpal recorded the police brutality on her phone. Gaurav is seen screaming in the footage, saying that he has done nothing wrong.
The police did not pay heed to the woman, who was crying and begging to let Gaurav go after seeing her husband being beaten. The police claim that she became violent while arresting Gaurav and resisted. Officials also alleged that Gaurav was drunk. Amritpal alleged that there were no issues between them and that the police brutally tortured her husband due to a misunderstanding. Top officials have said that a detailed investigation will be conducted into the death.
There was widespread protest against the police after the footage of the violence went viral on social media. Gaurav, who suffered serious brain injuries in the police attack, was in coma. The couple has two children.
