Bar Council withdraws order freezing enrolment of NALSAR students

NEW DELHI: The Bar Council revoked a previous order halting the enrollment of students of the Academy of Legal Studies and Research in Hyderabad. More than 450 students of the 2026 batch had filed a petition against inviting Supreme Court Chief Justice Surya Kant as the chief guest at the graduation ceremony.

Following this, Bar Council of India Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra issued an order that these students would not be allowed to enrol. There was a huge protest against the order. The Cockroach Janata Party threatened to protest before the Bar Council of India if the order was not revoked. The order was subsequently withdrawn. The new order states that all students can enrol.

The students' protest was triggered by the Chief Justice's stance when hearing the case related to the police violence during the Parliament march at Delhi's Jantar Mantar on July 20. The students criticised the Chief Justice, who refused to see the video evidence of the police violence, and had earlier called the youth of the country "cockroaches". The students also pointed out in the petition that inviting a person who took such a stance to the graduation ceremony on campus is not in line with the principles espoused by the university. The students had made it clear that their protest was not against the Chief Justice, but against his stance.
