NEW DELHI: An Indian soldier was martyred in an ambush by Pakistani commandos and terrorists in north Kashmir shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Kargil Diwas speech. Four soldiers, including a major, were injured.
The attack took place on Saturday morning on the Line of Control in the Machil sector in the Kupwara district. The attack was carried out by the Border Action Team (BAT) comprising Pakistani soldiers and terrorists.
The Army neutralized one Pakistani infiltrator but is not clear whether he was a terrorist or a Pakistani soldier. His rifle and dagger were recovered. During the encounter, two terrorists escaped to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Information was received that three terrorists had infiltrated near the Kamkari post in the district. The terrorists hurled grenades and fired at the Indian post. The encounter lasted for several hours as the forces retaliated. UP native Mohit Rathod succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
Intelligence has warned that there will be terrorist attacks in Jammu and Kashmir as assembly elections are about to be held. Terrorist attacks have increased in the border areas of Kupwara, Rajouri, Poonch and Doda.
11 soldiers lost their lives this month. It is reported that around 50 highly trained Pakistani terrorists have infiltrated the valley. They have possession of American-made M4 carbine rifles with night vision.
