NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has changed the way toll is collected for vehicles without FASTags on Indian national highways. The vehicles without FASTags will be charged lesser if they make the payment via UPI instead of using cash. The new charge will come into effect from November 15.

The new system is being implemented by amending the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008. According to the new rule, vehicles without FASTag will be charged toll according to the method of payment they choose. Non-FASTag users will have to pay double the normal toll fee when paying the fee using cash at toll plazas. Those using digital payment methods like UPI will have to pay only 1.25 times the normal toll fee.

The central government's new move aims to promote digital payments, reduce dependence on cash, and reduce waiting times at toll plazas. It is estimated that the new system will increase the transparency of digital transactions and make travel easier.
