CPM workers thrash UDF activists in front of police station in Kollam, cops also suffer beating

KOLLAM: CPM activists on Tuesday allegedly beat up the UDF activists, who came to lodge a complaint at the Kadakkal police station. The police were also beaten. In connection with the incident, CPM Mukkunnam branch secretary Sajeer, of Sajeer Manzil and a native of Mukunnam, Vimalkumar, a member of the branch committee and a native of Cherukara, and Visakh, a DYFI activist and a native of Erattakulam, were arrested and remanded by the police.

The incident happened around 10.30 pm on Tuesday. At 6 pm on Tuesday, in connection with the election victory celebration of NK Premachandran, Jishnu, of Puthen Veedu in Kadakkal and a Congress worker, burst firecrackers in front of his house. Neighbour and CPM activist Vimal Kumar questioned this and beat up Jishnu. Jishnu's eye was injured in the beating. Later in the night, Jishnu, along with UDF workers, filed a complaint at the Kadakkal police station.

While recording the statement based on the complaint, five CPM-DYFI workers came outside the station and got into an altercation and scuffle with the UDF workers who were standing in the station premises. ASI Vinod Kumar and CPO Vinshi were also beaten while trying to bring the situation under control.

Then the five escaped from the spot. Congress workers protested demanding the arrest of the accused. Based on this, a team led by Kadakkal CI arrested three of the accused. Two others are absconding. The arrested accused were produced in Kadakkal court and remanded. A case has been registered against the accused under charges including attempt to murder.
