KOLLAM: Kiran Kumar, husband of Vismaya, a medical student in Nilamel, has been found guilty in her suicide case. The quantum of sentence will be pronounced tomorrow. The bail of the accused has been cancelled. The verdict was pronounced by Kollam First Additional district sessions court judge K N Sujith. The court considered the case as the fifth one.
Vismaya’s father Thrivikraman Nair was in the court to hear the verdict. He had stated that he should be awarded maximum punishment and the one he gets will be a message to the society.
The charges against the accused were dowry death, dowry harassment, abetment to suicide, torture, threat and demand of dowry. The prosecution alleged that Kiran constantly tortured Vismaya with the aim of pushing her to commit suicide.
She was found hanging on June 21 in 2021 in the toilet adjacent to her bedroom at her husband’s, a mother vehicle inspector, house in Poruvazhi Ambalathumbhagam. Kiran Kumar, who fled after taking Vismaya to the hospital, surrendered on June 21 night at the Sasthamcotta station.
Kiran Kumar was terminated from service later. An investigation led by IG Harshitha Attaluri was completed in 90 days and charge sheet was filed on September 10. The trial which started on January 10 was completed on May 18. The Supreme Court had granted bail to Kiran a month ago when the trial was in its last stage.
