
PALAKKAD: Manju, who had defected from the Congress and became the president of Agali Panchayat with the support of the CPM, has resigned. Manju after resigning said that she has always been a Congress worker.
'I will always be a Congress worker. When I was proposed for the post of president, the LDF members supported me. As a Congress worker, I don’t want to accept this support. So, I am resigning from the president’s post,' she said.
Manju, who won the election as a UDF candidate, won after contesting as LDF's panchayat president candidate. There was a huge protest against Manju. She resigned the president’s post when the Congress was about to take strong action against her. Palakkad DCC President A Thankappan had informed that Manju would be given time till this evening to correct herself.
Manju, a UDF member from Chinnaparamba, ward 20 of Agali panchayat, who defected, had sparked a big controversy. Manju's response to the incident was that she did not get the party whip. Manju had also said that she got votes regardless of party politics. The Congress later approached the Election Commission, demanding to disqualify her. The Congress had informed that they would approach the high court, seeking action against her under the Anti-Defection Law.
