THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Four-year undergraduate students are now getting an opportunity to study online the courses of reputed universities abroad. These are courses of two to six months duration. Seven credits can be earned in each semester. These credits can be used to pass semesters and graduate. It can also be used to fast-track a degree in two and a half years and an honours degree in three and a half years. Students will be able to get certificates from foreign universities. Foreign university courses are becoming a part of undergraduate studies in the situation where half a million Malayalis are going to study abroad every year.

Seven credits needed in addition to the 21 credits that must be obtained through compulsory semester courses can be obtained this way. Online courses can be taken in all major and minor subjects. Online courses have two to four credits depending on the content and length of the course. At least two courses per semester can be taken online. One can also study online courses of IITs, IIMs, UGC, NPTEL, MHRD and universities across the country.

The government has directed the universities to notify the list of approved online courses within one month. Courses and credits must be approved by the Board of Studies. Credits earned through online learning will be added to the Academic Bank of Credit. These are useful for students even if they get a change of college. Kerala Varsity alone will approve more than 300 online courses.

Advanced courses can be studied

  • Students can study advanced courses, including science, from all over the world.
  • Credits in online studies are in the international credit framework and can be used for further studies abroad.
