KOCHI: In the face of adversity, 18-year-old Alisha Jinson from Manjummel has stepped up to support her family by driving an electric auto-rickshaw while continuing her Plus Two education.

Her father, a housekeeping contractor, suffered injuries in a bike accident, making it difficult for him to go to work. Meanwhile, her mother is battling severe pneumonia. Undeterred by these challenges, Alisha took on the responsibility of running the household.

She primarily drives Uber rides, operating from 6 PM to 10 PM after her studies. On an average day, Alisha earns up to Rs 1,000, and passengers often tip her upon learning about her situation. The auto-rickshaw she uses, KL 41 U 8639, belongs to her father Jinson. Alisha obtained her driving license as soon as she turned 18 on August 25, 2024.

She initially got admission for Plus Two at Chendamangalam Government Higher Secondary School, about 20 kilometers from home. She used to commute by bicycle, but after it was stolen from a junction, traveling to school became difficult. This led her to decide to start working.

Alisha is a commerce student at the National Institute of Open Schooling’s center in Pathadippalam. She has also completed a short-term course in fashion design. Her elder brother, Joshua, follows in their father's footsteps, working in housekeeping.

Want to travel solo across India

Alisha enjoys solo cycling trips and has visited places like Alappuzha and Fort Kochi Beach. Through her auto-rickshaw rides, she has explored most of Ernakulam district. Her dream is to travel solo across India. She is also a folk singer.

"I have had only good experiences so far. Since I drive at night, passengers often advise me to be cautious. I want to get a license to drive trailer lorries too. The biggest challenge I face is affording the high cost of education," says Alisha Jinson.
