Unscientific practices even in name of religion can't be allowed: Kerala HC

kerala-hc

KOCHI: High Court has directed to stop unscientific and harmful practices even if it is in the name of religion. Justice VG Arun's bench made this clear on a petition filed by PT Ravindran, a resident of Ernakulam, alleging that birds and animals are being sacrificed at Bhramarambika Vishnumayaswamy Devasthanam in Edathala in Ernakulam. According to the petition, Anand, a native of Edathala, has illegally built a shrine on the third floor of his house and performs pooja and sacrifice and throws the remains of birds and animals on the road.

The High Court said that the lack of action by the police and revenue authorities despite pointing out illegality in the name of religion is disturbing. "Law is same for all. Special treatment cannot be given on account of religion. The panchayat failed to take action against the place of worship. The RDO and district panchayat should check whether the shrine is functioning illegally by deputing the police. If any illegal activity is going on, it should be stopped. Edathala police should investigate and take action on complaints of bird and animal sacrifice. If the activity here is found to be in violation of the Panchayati Raj Act and building regulations, action should be taken", the order reads.
