AI camera: Traffic violations will be fined from today; children to be exempted

camera-

  • Relaxation up to 12 years
  • Helmet compulsory for children above 4 years
  • Fines applicable to VIPs also

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Amid controversies and protests, the AI cameras on the road will open their eyes at 8 am today. Kerala is the first state to use AI cameras to detect traffic violations. Of the 726 cameras installed under the Safe Kerala scheme, 692 will be used to impose fines. Official sources informed that the tuning of the cameras was completed by 6 pm yesterday. Cameras will operate for 24 hours every day.

For the time being, there will be no penalty for carrying children below 12 years of age as the third passenger on two-wheelers. Children above the age of four must wear a helmet. The wait is on the Centre's pending response to the letter issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles seeking to amend the law to allow children to ride on two-wheelers.

Minister Antony Raju said in a press conference that the imposition of road camera fines is subject to auditing and no one has been exempted from fines. The exemption is only for emergency services exempted as per central norms. VIPs and common people are all the same to the camera.

Warning signs are now in place where cameras are currently located. The motor vehicle department has been directed to publish the violations detected by the cameras on a daily basis on its website. Of the 726 cameras, 34 are non-functional due to reasons including needing to be replaced due to road construction, damage due to road accidents and synchronization mismatch.

Appeal can be filed

An appeal against the fine can be filed with the District Enforcement Officer within 14 days of receipt of the challan. The appeal should be made to the local enforcement RTO where the violation is found. Only after this, the fine should be paid. The online system for filing the appeal will also be ready within two months. 25,000 notices will be sent each day. The situation will be evaluated and revised later. The violation report will be sent via post. Out of a total of one and a half crore vehicles registered in the state, the mobile number, e-mail ID, etc. of more than 70 lakh vehicles are not in the portal of the Motor Vehicle Department. This is the reason why post is sent instead of SMS.

  2. Not wearing seat belt (₹500)
  3. Mobile phone usage (₹ 2000)

  6. Speeding (₹1500)
  7. Dangerous parking (₹250)

'The aim is to reduce road accidents. Kerala is a state where more than 40,000 road accidents occur every year. It is the fifth most road accident-prone state in India. Kerala accounts for 8.1% of road accidents despite having only 2.76% of the population.'
