NEW DELHI: The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) has issued a drug safety alert regarding the use of the painkiller Meftal. The IPC issued the alert after reports claimed that the drug can cause allergic reactions affecting internal organs.
Meftal containing mefenamic acid is prescribed by doctors for menstrual pain, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, dysmenorrhea, inflammation, fever and toothache. IPC said that health professionals, patients and consumers should exercise caution in the use of Meftal and report any adverse reactions through the website www.ipc.gov.in or the ADR PVPI app. Helpline no. 1800-180-3024.
The IPC, an autonomous body functioning under the Ministry of Health, sets standards for all drugs manufactured, sold and used in India.
