THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Smart waste collection bin with camera has been installed at Manaveeyam Veedhi. The new bin was installed by Novelty Solutions, a company in Bengaluru and was inaugurated by Minister M B Rajesh.

It also features a smart waste disposal bin with a camera. Food waste cannot be deposited in it. Only inorganic waste such as plastic paper cups can be dropped. The company has set up the bin on an experimental basis. Automatic sensor is used to open and close the hole to dump waste.

A camera that rotates to different places is installed at the top. It can be viewed remotely in the company control room. The camera will also capture the sound accurately. There are four USB ports for charging phones etc. It also has two LED screens. The aim is to generate revenue from it by placing advertisements on it.

The company itself is responsible for removing waste and cleaning the bin. The bin will also cost up to Rs 2.5 lakh. The company has approached the corporation for setting up bins at various places in the city. However, the municipal governing body is not in favor of this.
