My mother wrapped all my awards in towel believing it were made of gold, says A R Rahman

CHENNAI: A R Rahman's musical career spans over three decades. Meanwhile, he received many awards including the Oscars. His revelation about keeping awards including Oscar, Grammy and Golden Globe is going viral on social media.


Rahman said that his mother Kareema Begum thought that all the international honors he received were made of gold. Rahman said that she wrapped all the awards in a towel.

Rahman said that his mother believed that the international awards he garnered were made of gold. She wrapped all these in a towel and kept in Dubai. After the death of her, went to her room, took the awards and shifted them to Dubai Firdaus Studio, he said.


Rahman's revelation was in an interview given to 'Film Companion'. He said that all the awards he received in India are kept in a separate room in Chennai. Rahman won the Oscar for the song ‘Jai Ho’ from the film Slumdog Millionaire released in 2008.


Rahman's mother Kareema Begum passed away on December 28 in 2020. Kareema was wife of director R K Shekhar. Apart from Rahman, the couple also have children singer A R Reyhana, Ishrat and Fatima.
