Kerala likely to receive heavy rainfall for next five days; people asked to exercise caution

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that Kerala is likely to receive widespread rain accompanied by thunder and lightning for the next five days. According to the IMD, isolated places in Kerala are likely to receive very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds with a speed of 30 to 40 km per hour from August 15 to 19.

A cyclonic circulation has formed over the South East Arabian Sea and the South Kerala coast. A low-pressure area is located up to 1.5 km height from Konkan to the cyclonic circulation. As a result, Kerala will receive very heavy rainfall for the next five days, the IMD said. It also warned fishermen in the Kerala - Lakshadweep - Karnataka coasts not to venture into the sea for fishing.

Today, an orange alert has been issued in Kozhikode and Wayanad districts, and a yellow alert in all other districts. Isolated places are likely to receive very heavy rainfall. Isolated places in Idukki district will receive moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning and strong winds with a speed of up to 40 kmph in the next three hours. According to the latest update of the IMD, isolated places in Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Palakkad, Malappuram and Wayanad districts will receive moderate rainfall, while isolated places in Thiruvananthapuram will receive light rainfall.
