THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Former KPCC president MM Hassan has demanded that Dr Shashi Tharoor, who criticised Nehru, resign from the Congress Working Committee. He was speaking after dedicating the first award of the Nehru Centre to former minister G Sudhakaran.

"Tharoor tried to belittle Nehru and Indira Gandhi to praise Advani. Tharoor is a man who has not shed a single drop of sweat for the country and the society. If the attempt to tarnish Nehru's image continues, the Nehru Centre will respond in public to Tharoor's opportunistic politics," Hassan said.

CPM leader G Sudhakaran said that a UN official cannot become a world leader if he travels the world and Nehru was a statesman. "Nehru is among the men of his time. There are many things to criticize Nehru ideologically. Even then, Nehru was a beacon of democracy. A black mark was Nehru's dismissal of the EMS government in 1957," G Sudhakaran pointed out.
