Thoothukudi police shooting: Stalin gives government jobs to relatives of deceased; decision taken hours before the third anniversary of the incident

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government has offered government jobs to relatives of those who were shot by the police during the anti-Sterlite protests which took place in Thoothukudi in 2018. Chief Minister MK Stalin has handed over appointment orders to relatives of those who were killed and seriously injured in police shootings. The jobs were provided to the relatives as per their educational qualifications.

Of these, 16 were hired as junior assistants and one as a jeep driver. They will work under the Revenue and Rural Development Departments of the Thoothukudi district. Ministers Thiagarajan, Murthy and KR Periya Karuppan, Thoothukudi MP Kanimozhi and District Collector Aneesh Sekhar were present on the occasion.

The police firing took place on May 22, 2018, in Thoothukudi. Thirteen people were killed in firing on protesters at the Vedanta company's copper processing factory. Several people were seriously injured in the incident.
