THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The audit department of the university found that AA Rahim MP and student leaders did not return the books taken from the Kerala University library. Eight books such as Bhagat Singh, Arabic History, Swadesabhimani Vakkam Maulavi, Kerala Muslims and Tipu Sultan, which Rahim took from the Islamic Studies Library of Kerala University five years ago, have not been returned. These were taken when he was a research student. While he was a research student in the Department of Islamic Studies from 2014 to 2017, Rahim received a fellowship of Rs 4 lakhs, but it is alleged that the research paper was not submitted.
According to university library rules, books should not be held for more than six months. There is a provision to renew if required while being a student. After the expiry of the period, Rahim refused to return the books even though the authorities asked him to do so. Since he was a member of the University Syndicate during this period, no further action was taken in this regard. Last June, when the stock audit of the library was conducted, it was found that Rahim had not returned the books. The audit department has reported this to the superiors.
Many student leaders have also complained of not returning expensive library books. Many department heads are accused of turning a blind eye to this. Save University Campaign committee chairman RS Sasikumar and secretary M Shajar Khan asked the VC to take steps to get the lost books back into the library's collection.
