KOCHI: The Kerala High Court on Friday stayed the lower court's order dropping murder charges against IAS officer Sriram Venkataraman in the case pertaining to the death of journalist KM Basheer. The action of the High Court is in the appeal filed by the government against the order of the Thiruvananthapuram Additional Sessions Court I which dropped culpable homicide charges in the 2019 rash driving case. The court accepted the government's petition in the file and informed it will check whether the homicide charge will stand. The trial is also ordered to be suspended for two months.

The Thiruvananthapuram Additional Sessions Court I stated that only the charges of non-culpable homicide, drunken driving and negligent driving will stand against Sriram and that only the charge under the Motor Vehicle Act will stand against the second accused Wafa Firoz. The government's appeal was against this order and told the High Court that the lower court did not consider important facts regarding the homicide charge. The government filed the appeal following several demands for an appeal against the lower court verdict.
