THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: DIG R Nishanthini will visit Vizhinjam today (Wednesday) where violent incidents were witnessed. A ban on liquor is continuing and the police are on high alert. A special police team making Nishanthini as the special officer was formed the other day.

The government appointed a special team headed by Nishanthini for coastal security following an intelligence warning that there was a planned attempt to spread the Vizhinjam strike to other places. This is to maintain law and order and ensure security to the entire coastal zone. Along with easing the tension in Vizhinjam, the team consisting of five SPs and eight DySPs is also responsible for ensuring that violence does not spread to other areas of Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam. SP rank officers from vigilance, crime branch, crime detachment and battalions have been included in the team.

More than 1200 policemen including from other districts and the armed police battalion have been deployed in the Vizhinjam area. ADGP M R Ajith Kumar has directed police officers on leave to return to duty and to be vigilant in all stations. Officials belonging to IG, DIG and SP ranks should directly control the situation.
