Leopard found dead in chicken coop in Mannarkad died due to capture myopathy, states post-mortem report

PALAKKAD: The post-mortem report of the leopard, that died after getting trapped in a chicken coop in a man's house in Mannarkad here, is out. As per the report, the animal died due to a heart attack after entering the coop to eat chicken. The leopard got into the chicken coop at Philip's house in Mannarkkad's Mekkalapara on Sunday at around 1 am and got stuck. The forest guards came to capture the wild animal realized that the leopard is dead. The forest officials had decided to tranquilize the leopard and catch it with a net.

The post-mortem report indicated that the leopard died due to capture myopathy. Dr Arun Zacharia, who conducted the post-mortem, said that the cause of death of the tiger was heart attack and internal organ failure. The post-mortem was conducted at the division office of Mannarkkad Forest Department.

Meanwhile, minister AK Saseendran alleged non-cooperation from the people over the incident. "People tried to provoke the animal by taking photos etc. The people should cooperate with the forest department. In such cases, the instructions given by the forest guards should be followed", the minister said.

Philip saw the leopard in the cage when he came out hearing some noise in the night and had a narrow escape. The leopard pounced on Philip, but he immediately entered the house and closed the door. The forest department had captured three leopards from this area in the last two years. Animals venturing out of habitat has made life difficult for people here.
