DHAKA: Bangladesh owes a hefty sum to the Adani Group. The Bangladesh government owes $846 million in electricity dues to the Adani Group. As a result, the company has now cut off 50 per cent of its power supply.
Adani Power Jharkhand Limited, which supplies electricity from Jharkhand to Bangladesh, has stopped supplying electricity. Bangladesh had requested a line-up credit of $170 million but the company was not willing to provide this either.
Bangladesh had sought time till Thursday to pay the money earlier but they could not find the amount to be paid to the company. The Adani Group has been supplying 1,016 MW of electricity to Bangladesh.
Bangladesh is currently reeling under a severe power crisis after the Adani Group slashed its electricity supply. Bangladesh is facing a shortage of 1,600 MW of electricity over its requirement. The Adani Group had earlier issued a written notice to Bangladesh's energy secretary, asking the government to pay the dues immediately.
In a notice sent on October 27, the company had asked Bangladesh to clear $846 million in dues by October 30. It was warned that the power supply would be disconnected otherwise.
