KANNUR: The CBI court directed the superintendent of Kannur Central Jail to appear directly in the incident of allowing ayurvedic treatment to Peethambaran, the main accused in the Periya case. The court directed the superintendent to appear tomorrow.
The Central Jail Medical Board directed Ayurveda treatment for 40 days to Peethambaran, the first accused in the Periya case and CPM leader, without the permission of the CBI court. Peethambaran is presently undergoing ayurveda treatment.
The jail superintendent had on October 14 directed the jail doctor Amarnath to examine Peethambaran after he fell ill. After examination, the jail doctor gave a report saying that he needs an expert treatment. A report came later on October 19 that Peethambaran needed hospitalization.
Then on October 24 the jail superintendent formed a medical board on his own without the permission of the CBI court. This board directed 40 days of inpatient treatment. It is reported that as Peethambaran was suffering from back pain and some other ailments, advised to be hospitalized.
A double murder took place in Periya in February 2019. Of the 24 accused in the case, 16 are in jail. The charges against the accused include murder, tampering with evidence and conspiracy.
