People have numerous dogs at their homes including foreign breeds. However, we are not talking about any of them. The ones we are referring to are those dogs which do not require any of the five star facilities of the foreign breeds. Tamil Nadu is their native place. A dog given as dowry in weddings, that is ‘Kanni’. According to Tamil tradition, these dogs are given for the safety of bride’s safety. ‘Kanni’ means virgin. They are also known as guardian of virgins. Even though Kanni and Chippippara are similar in their looks, they can be differentiated on the basis of their colours. The black ones are called Kanni while the tan ones are called Chippipara. These dogs have also been approved by the Kennel club of India (KCI) as two different species. The sharp face, lean body and long legs enable them to chase their prey.
As good watch dogs, they have a special ability to keep an eye out for strangers in their area. Hence, they are also used as guard dogs in the agricultural lands that share border with forests. They can easily grasp everything and can be made even brighter through training. They are hounds and are good guard dogs as well. They have to be trained from their childhood itself. Otherwise, it will be difficult to train them once they get old.
