Mullaperiyar dispute: Formed State Dam Safety Committee, says Centre

ss

NEW DELHI: The central government has informed the Supreme Court that a State Dam Safety Committee has been constituted to examine and decide on inter-state disputes related to dams. With this, the Supreme Court decision will be decisive in disbanding the Mullaperiyar Supervisory Committee. The central government informed about the formation of the State Dam Safety Committee under the National Dam Safety Authority when the apex court considered the Mullaperiyar issue.

Although Mullaperiyar Dam is located within Kerala, it is owned by Tamil Nadu. In this situation, the committee can take decisions by considering disputes related to dam safety, the Centre said. A bench comprising justices MR Shah and Sanjay Karol directed the Centre to submit an affidavit within two weeks in this regard. The court will hear the matter again on August 22. Advocates Jaideep Gupta and G Prakash appeared for Kerala.

Four members of the committee

1. National Dam Safety Authority Regional Director

2. Deputy Director

3, Representative of the state where the dam is located

4. Representative of the state owning the dam
