KOCHI: The Lakeshore Hospital in Kochi has issued an explanation regarding the organ donation case. Dr H Ramesh, director of medical services, informed that Udumbanchola native Abin, who was injured in an accident, was given proper treatment and organ donation was done in accordance with the rules. The hospital authorities said that they will convey this to the court.
'The patient was in critical condition when brought to the hospital. The pupils were dilated. The brain damage was severe. Organ donation was recommended when all possibilities of the patient returning to life were closed,' Dr Ramesh stated.
On November 29, 2009, VJ Abin, a native of Udumbanchola, Idukki, was brought to Mar Baselios Hospital, Kothamangalam in critical condition following a bike accident. He was shifted to Lakeshore Hospital for expert treatment the next day. The very next day, the doctors declared Abin brain dead and performed organ donation.
However, Dr. Ganapathy, a native of Kollam, approached the Ernakulam First Class Magistrate Court alleging mystery in the incident. Subsequently, the court examined the doctors of Manjeri Medical College and Thiruvananthapuram Medical College and decided to initiate criminal proceedings against Lakeshore Hospital and eight doctors for the offense of unauthorised removal of organs of the accident victim.
