NEW DELHI: The Haryana police on Wednesday morning fired tear gas shells at protesting farmers on the Punjab-Haryana Shambhu border. The police high-handedness comes just before the start of the touted ‘Delhi Chalo’ march by protesting farmers.
The farmers have already stated that the government would be held responsible for any skirmish happening in the border area. The farmer leaders said they won’t endorse violence and also revealed that the date for the Delhi Chalo march was decided way back on November 7th 2023.
Pointing out the barricades as a denial of rights, the farmers' leaders said that they would march peacefully if the central government cooperated. At the same time, the central government has decided to allow time for further discussion with farmer leaders. The government has clarified that the proposals are welcome in the presented plan while Union Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda assured that the problems will be solved for sure.
Meanwhile, Haryana police warned the owners of earthmover machines and bulldozers present in the protest site saying the owners would be held liable for their actions. Terming it as a nonbailable offence, Haryana police asked the owners to quickly withdraw the machines or else face legal action.
