State faces shortage of solar net meters; PM Surya Ghar subsidy applications flood in

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With the rooftop solar project announced by the Prime Minister, solar net meters are not available in the state. Thousands are waiting to get metered for electricity generation after installing solar panels. Panels were fixed in more than 10,000 homes before the existing solar scheme in the state expires on March 31. Additionally, KSEB states that the shortage of net meters is due to the large number of people participating in the Surya Ghar initiative.

Surya Ghar received more than one lakh applications within a week. While a new order was placed after the stock was exhausted, there was a delay in obtaining the meters due to high demand across the country. Furthermore, solar panels and inverters are also in short supply. Net meters can be obtained from outside sources for Rs 4000, but the quality is not guaranteed. Alternatively, people can opt to pay rent for the meter provided by KSEB. If the meter is damaged, it will be replaced. KSEB assures that solar meters will be made available to everyone by April 10, with orders already placed for new meters.

The subsidy for the PM Surya Ghar initiative is Rs 78,000 for solar systems up to 3 kilowatts while existing rooftop solar systems receive a subsidy of Rs 43,000.

Applications for the subsidy can be made on the official website pmsuryghar.gov.in by selecting the state and entering the electricity consumer number, mobile number, and email.

The application process involves filling out the provided format on the site, attaching required documents and awaiting approval from KSEB.

Necessary documents for the application include Aadhaar, photo ID, residency certificate, income certificate, ration card and age proof certificate.
