NEW DELHI: In a shocking turn of events, Kanhaiya Kumar, Congress' Lok Sabha candidate from the North East Delhi constituency, was attacked during his election campaign. The assailants approached Kanhaiya with a garland and assaulted him. They also threw ink at him and went on to threaten and attack Aam Aadmi Party's woman councilor Chhaya Gaurav Sharma, who was present at the time of the incident.
In her complaint to Delhi Police, Chhaya Sharma said that her shawl was snatched away by assailants, who threatened to kill her and her husband, adding that black ink was thrown at the crowd and people present. The complaint also claims that many, including women, were injured. According to the police, the attack took place when Kanhaiya Kumar left the AAP office in Karthar Nagar after a meeting with councillor Chhaya Sharma.
In videos released after the incident, the alleged assailants, who called themselves 'Sanatani lions' said they did what they did because Mr Kanhaiya had raised slogans saying the country would be broken into parts.
This was a reference to the alleged slogans raised at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in 2016, when Kanhaiya Kumar was the JNU Students' Union president.
