More than 50 houses damaged; rain fury claims three lives in Kerala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The incessant rains, continuing in the state for the second straight day wreaked serious damage to properties while three lives were lost. A mother and her son died when the wall of their house fell in Palakkad Kottekkad. Sulochana (53), wife of late Shivan and son Ranjith (32) are the victims.

Sulochana, who was bedridden, and her son Ranjith lived in a one-room house. The incident happened during the late night hours when both were sleeping. An elderly woman died after falling into a water-filled ditch in Kannur. Koleri native Kunjamina (51) died in the incident. While walking in the water-logged area, Kunjamina accidentally fell into a well, which remained unrecognizable in the deluge.

Ernakulam:

The Aluva Shiva temple got submerged after the water rose in Periyar due to heavy rains.

Kottayam:

A tree fell on two cars plying on the Bund road on the Kottayam- Kumarakam- Cherthala route. Another tree fell on the pavement of the Kummanam Elankavu temple.

Idukki:

On the Chappath-Kattapana road, traffic snarl occurred due to the collapse of an old stone wall in the Aladi section. The house partially collapsed after a tree fell in the Manathodu region.

Thrissur:

A big mango tree fell on top of a car in Ollur.

Kollam:

The branches of the fallen tree fell on the bus carrying school students. The children escaped unharmed. A huge tree was uprooted in Mangad government HSS premises.

Due to heavy rain, access to Tenkasi Kutralam Falls and Aryankavu Palaruvi Falls has been blocked.

Alappuzha:

31 houses partially collapsed in the district due to heavy rain. Houses were damaged in Kainakary and Edathua. A couple was injured when a tree fell near the Mattancherry bridge. They were travelling on a scooter and were taking shelter on the side of the road.

The tree branch fell on Unais (30) and his wife Alina (28) in Shiyad Manzil. Both are undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit. It is reported that Unais's condition is critical.

Palakkad:

The body of a youth who went missing in Palakkayam Vattapara Cherupuzha was found.

Malappuram:

An auto driver suffered injuries after a tree fell on a goods auto in Thamarakuzhi. Abdul Hameed, a native of Malappuram Kunnummal, was injured.

Kozhikode:

Two families have been displaced following a landslide at Palazhi in Pantheerankavu village. In Farook, a housewife was trapped inside her house after the front portion collapsed. With locals taking the initiative, the wall was demolished and the woman was brought out.

Pathanamthitta:

Around 10 electric posts were broken in the rains in Pandalam. 20 houses were damaged due to tree felling.
