Iran faces succession crisis following death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei; Can Mojtaba Khamenei survive Israel’s ‘Elimination’ warning?

TEHRAN: Iran has been plunged into an unprecedented leadership crisis following the confirmed death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a coordinated U.S.-Israeli airstrike last Saturday. In accordance with Article 111 of the Iranian Constitution, a three-member Interim Leadership Council has been established to govern the nation. The council is composed of Ayatollah Alireza Arafi, President Masoud Pezeshkian, and Chief Justice Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei.

Reports regarding a permanent successor have centered on Mojtaba Khamenei, the late Supreme Leader’s son. While some international outlets suggest the Assembly of Experts has already finalised his appointment under pressure from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the Iranian government has officially denied these claims. The Iranian Consulate in Mumbai issued a formal statement on March 4, 2026, dismissing reports of a selected candidate as having "no official source."

The strike on the Supreme Leader's compound also claimed the lives of several of his family members, including his daughter and daughter-in-law. While Mojtaba Khamenei is reported to be safe, the regional situation remains extremely volatile. Israeli officials, including the Defense Ministry, have issued stark warnings that any future leader who continues a policy of aggression against Israel will remain a primary target for assassination.

As the nation observes 40 days of mourning, the Assembly of Experts faces the daunting task of electing a permanent successor amidst active conflict and heightened security threats. For now, the interim council remains the paramount authority in Tehran, tasked with maintaining state stability during one of the most transformative periods in the history of the Islamic Republic.
