Joseph Vijay’s emergence as a formidable presence in Tamil Nadu politics is not a sudden phenomenon but the result of a meticulously planned strategy initiated years ago. Although the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) was officially established on February 2, 2024, its foundational strength was derived from the Vijay Makkal Iyakkam (VMI), a fan-based organisation formed in 2009. The recurring letter 'V' in these organisational titles signifies not only the leader's name but also the 'Victory' he achieved by becoming the leader of the single largest party and assuming the office of Chief Minister in his debut election.
This political milestone marks the realisation of a vision Vijay has nurtured for over a decade and a half. His political strength is deeply rooted in the cinematic culture of Tamil Nadu, where his dynamic screen presence and rhythmic dance style resonated with a broad demographic. By surpassing established contemporaries such as Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, and Ajith in professional remuneration, Vijay signalled his transition from a cinematic icon to a primary political contender. His trajectory closely mirrors that of the legendary M.G. Ramachandran (MGR), who leveraged his "superhero" image to secure a permanent legacy in the state’s governance.
The organisational backbone of the TVK consists of approximately 80,000 fan clubs spread across Tamil Nadu, primarily driven by a motivated youth demographic. For the past fifteen years, these groups have been actively engaged in significant social welfare initiatives, including the distribution of free laptops to students, large-scale blood donation drives, and active participation in flood relief operations. Such extensive civic engagement ensured that the electorate did not perceive Vijay’s transition from "reel life" to real-world leadership as an abrupt shift. His presence in the public sphere was further solidified through his participation in the 2017 Jallikattu protests and his long-standing dialogues with national figures such as Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi, and social activist Anna Hazare.
In alignment with Tamil political tradition, Vijay has anchored his party’s ideology in the Thirukkural, specifically championing the principle that all individuals are equal by birth. While Dravidian politics has historically maintained a complex relationship with faith, the TVK emphasises secular values alongside social justice and anti-corruption measures. The party’s victory is particularly significant for its departure from the long-standing "cash-for-votes" system that has influenced Tamil Nadu’s electoral process for decades. Vijay’s pledge to protect the public exchequer from personal or party interests has provided a sense of renewed hope to the populace.
Despite holding the Chief Minister's office, Vijay operates within a complex political framework where several of his coalition partners—including the Congress, CPI(M), and VCK—maintain historical ties with the DMK. This interdependence may initially complicate administrative efforts to investigate previous governmental corruption. The current assembly under Vijay’s leadership is notable for its technocratic composition, featuring a significant number of doctors, engineers, and IIT graduates, supported by the experience of veteran politicians like Sengottaiyan. While he faces the challenges of managing a coalition, historical precedents suggest that such environments can temper a leader’s skills and foster policy excellence. Given the impactful nature of his political debut, there is a strong expectation that his administration will strive for a significant and lasting impact on the state’s development.
