The standoff between Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat and the Wrestling Federation of India has escalated sharply. What began as a dispute between an athlete and a sports federation has now evolved into a significant political controversy.

Vinesh was one of the leading voices who publicly raised sexual harassment allegations against former Wrestling Federation president and former BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. She also led protests on the streets in support of the complainants. Following the controversy, Brij Bhushan stepped down from the post of federation president. However, despite resigning, he was accused of ensuring that his close associates retained control of the federation. Soon after, Vinesh suffered a major setback at the Paris Olympics after missing out on a medal due to being 100 grams overweight. Following the disappointment, she announced her retirement from wrestling and entered politics, later becoming an MLA in Haryana on a Congress ticket.

Recently, Vinesh announced her decision to return to competitive wrestling, which once again triggered tensions between her and the federation. She had declared that she would make her comeback through the National Championship being held in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, considered Brij Bhushan’s political stronghold. However, Vinesh later alleged that her online registration for the tournament had been blocked. The federation then stated that her registration had been accepted. Soon after, Vinesh publicly revealed that she was one of the six women wrestlers who had filed sexual harassment complaints against Brij Bhushan. Following this, the federation initiated disciplinary action against her. The federation claimed that Vinesh had failed to follow technical procedures requiring retired athletes to inform anti-doping authorities in advance before returning to competition. Based on this, she was barred not only from participating in the Gonda Championship but also from competing until June 26 this year.

Vinesh alleged that the federation’s move was part of an attempt to prevent her from competing in major events, including this year’s Asian Games. Despite the ban, she arrived at the competition venue in Gonda, but organisers stopped her from participating, citing the suspension. The federation maintained that Vinesh’s response to the show-cause notice issued against her was unsatisfactory, leading to the continuation of the ban. However, Vinesh claimed that a planned campaign was being carried out against her. She said she would neither retire from wrestling nor step away from the sport and would continue her fight against injustice. Reports suggest she may approach the court against the federation’s action.

Vinesh is one of India’s most accomplished wrestlers, having won a bronze medal at the World Championships and gold medals at the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and Asian Championships. She has also held the world No.1 ranking. Her Olympic medal dream slipped away by the narrowest of margins. Many believe that forcing an athlete of her stature onto protest stages and creating an atmosphere where athletes fear speaking against federation officials is unhealthy for Indian sports. At the same time, attempts to turn sporting disputes into political battles are also being questioned. If Vinesh still has the ability to compete and succeed at the international level, critics say the federation should support her rather than create obstacles. There are also growing calls for the Union Sports Ministry to intervene to ensure that sports arenas do not become platforms for political battles.
