NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the Karnataka High Court's verdict that Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations can be held at the Eidgah grounds in Bengaluru. The Supreme Court said that the status quo should continue for two days and the program is not allowed. The court also directed that the pooja be performed elsewhere.
The Waqf Board has filed a petition challenging the Karnataka High Court's decision to allow Ganesha Chaturthi celebrations at the Eidgah Maidan in Bengaluru's Chamarajpet. The petition was considered urgently by the Supreme Court division bench. A bench comprising justices Hemant Gupta and Sudhanshu Dhulia referred the case to a bench comprising the Chief Justice following a difference of opinion. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal appeared on behalf of the Waqf Board.
Meanwhile, tight security has been put in place outside the Eidgah Maidan in Bengaluru's Chamarajpet to avoid any untoward incident.
