Decision to rename district crime branch to district investigation unit 

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A decision has been taken at a high-level meeting to rename the district crime branch. It will hereafter be known as the District Investigation Unit (DIU). The cases that fall under the jurisdiction of District Superintendents of Police (SPs) and Commissioners are handed over to the district crime branch. Usually, important cases that require a separate investigation before being transferred to the crime branch are assigned to the district crime branch.

There have been long-standing demands to strengthen the district crime branch. When the responsibilities of Station House Officers (SHOs) were handed over to Sub-Inspectors (SIs), the Inspector-level posts were also restructured.

The aim is to incorporate these posts into the district crime branch and transform it into a specialised investigative agency. The decision was taken at a high-level meeting of Additional Directors General of Police (ADGPs) held recently.
