THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: House numbers will no longer change even when ward boundaries are altered. The Local Self-Government Department has decided in principle to introduce a system for assigning permanent identification numbers to houses. Similar to postal PIN codes, each house will be allotted a unique 10-digit digital number, along with a QR code.
At present, house numbers change whenever wards are reorganised, the boundaries of local self-government institutions are altered or the population increases. The permanent numbering system is intended to address the difficulties this causes for both public administration and residents.
Currently, house numbers are assigned by combining the name of the local self-government institution, the ward number and the house's serial number within the ward. Consequently, changes in ward numbers and the addition of new houses can lead to changes in existing house numbers.
The Information Kerala Mission has prepared a model project for implementing the unified house numbering system and submitted it to the government.
QR code to contain all details
Each local self-government institution will have a common identification code. Separate codes will be assigned to different zones, while each house will also have a common number. The QR code will incorporate all these details. The QR code will also include numbers linked to LPG connections, electricity connections, ration cards and water connections. Scanning the code will provide access to the corresponding information. The house owner's mobile phone number can also be included. The system is expected to help ensure the accurate delivery of disaster management assistance and other government services.
