THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: While extensive vehicle modifications remain prohibited, the government is set to allow certain minor alterations aimed at enhancing a vehicle's appearance. Tourist vehicles may soon be permitted to use tasteful stickers and interior ambient lighting, while upgraded sound systems for playing music will also be allowed. However, modifications such as flame-throwing exhausts and other hazardous alterations will continue to be strictly banned.
During the election campaign, Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan had promised to relax rules on vehicle modifications, citing the interests of young vehicle enthusiasts.
Transport Commissioner C.H. Nagaraju has submitted a report to the government detailing the modifications that could be permitted. The report recommends allowing only 18 standard enhancements that are already widely accepted, including seat covers, floor mats, and steering wheel covers. Officials noted that every vehicle model receives road approval based on specifications cleared by central regulatory agencies. As a result, any modification that alters the manufacturer's approved specifications will continue to be treated as illegal.
