THRISSUR: A remand prisoner in Viyyur Jail died while undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College Hospital. Resh Babu (33), son of Babu from Padinjarepurackal house in Pulakattukara, died in the incident. It is also alleged that the police failed to send the mentally challenged youth to a regular jail. Resh Babu was arrested on May 16 for engaging in a melee. On the 17th, the Thrissur Judicial First Class Magistrate Court-1 remanded him. On the evening of the 26th, Resh Babu's father was summoned, saying his son was unwell and had been moved to Medical College.
Resh allegedly explained that while going to the toilet, he had put an incense stick between his teeth, causing blood to come out of his mouth, and he vomited blood. The father says that the doctor said that Resh had fluid on his lips and a bruise on his head. The police later explained that he had taken an overdose of medicine. However, the father said that Resh did not have any illness that required taking medicine. Babu has filed a complaint with the City Police Commissioner.
The initial postmortem report revealed that Resh Babu's death was not due to stress and that the cause of his death was a low platelet count in his blood, which caused bleeding in his head and affected his internal organs. The cause of the low platelet count is yet to be determined. The internal organs were sent to the pathology lab.
