THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a tragic incident, a 26-year-old research student at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) died after his scooter crashed into a stray dog. The deceased has been identified as Athul, a native of Iringallur in Kozhikode. His mother, Jisha, who was riding pillion, suffered serious injuries and has been admitted to a private hospital.

The accident occurred at around 10:15 p.m. near Shanthi Nagar Market in Kazhakkoottam. Athul and his mother were travelling from Station Kadavu in Kulathoor to their rented house near Nehru Junction when a stray dog suddenly ran onto the road from a side lane and collided with their scooter. The impact caused Athul to lose control of the vehicle, throwing both riders onto the road. He suffered serious head injuries in the fall and was rushed to a nearby hospital. However, despite receiving emergency medical treatment, he could not be saved. Hospital authorities said Jisha also sustained injuries in the accident but is currently out of danger and undergoing treatment.

The family had been living in a rented house near Kazhakkoottam Nehru Junction. Following a post-mortem examination at the Medical College Hospital, the body was handed over to the relatives. Athul is survived by his father, Hareesh.
