KOCHI: Actor Mammootty has promised to provide a prosthetic leg to Sandhya Bijukumar, who lost her left leg after being seriously injured in the landslide at Koombanpara in Adimali. Doctors were forced to amputate her leg above the knee during treatment. Sandhya’s husband, Bijukumar, also lost his life in the landslide, which completely destroyed their home. Mammootty reached out to Sandhya and offered her support at a time when she was struggling with immense hardship. He spoke to her through a video call to check on her well-being. The call was made to the phone of Jose Paul, Vice President of Rajagiri Hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment.
Mammootty assured Sandhya that he would arrange a prosthetic leg for her and also promised to help with the construction of a new house in Adimali. His words brought much-needed relief to Sandhya during this difficult period. The actor had earlier taken responsibility for her medical expenses and has now directed Care and Share International Chairman K. Muraleedharan to extend all possible assistance for the prosthetic limb.
With no home to return to, Sandhya had been staying in the hospital for 38 days. She is now preparing to shift to a rented house. During the landslide, she had been trapped under the debris of her collapsed home for several hours. By the time she reached the hospital, blood flow to her left leg had completely stopped, and multiple bones were fractured. Doctors managed to restore blood circulation after an eight-hour surgery, but severe damage to her muscles and tissues led to a serious infection. As her condition worsened, doctors had no option but to amputate her leg above the knee.
After the wounds healed, Sandhya began walking again with the support of physiotherapy. Doctors have advised her to continue physiotherapy for two more weeks, after which she will be ready for the prosthetic leg. Last year, Sandhya also lost her son to cancer. Her daughter, a nursing student, is now her only source of support.
