IDUKKI: Sandhya, who was injured in a landslide at Koombanpara in Adimali and is undergoing treatment, has had her leg amputated. Sandhya is presently undergoing treatment at Rajagiri Hospital in Aluva. Although an emergency surgery was performed, the leg had to be amputated. The left leg was amputated below the knee.
The landslide occurred in the area around 10.30 pm last Saturday. A section of the embankment, which was more than 50 feet high, collapsed onto the road and the houses below.
25 families from the area were shifted to a camp following heavy rains. Sandhya and her husband Biju were among them. They returned home to take important documents and to eat food. In the meantime, the mud caved in on top of the house.
Sandhya and Biju, who were trapped inside the house, were brought out after hours of rescue work. However, Biju could not be saved. The couple's daughter is a third-year BSc nursing student in Kottayam. Their son had died of cancer a year ago.
Biju was a carpenter. Biju's son of Class X was diagnosed with cancer last year. He died while undergoing treatment. The family has no other source of income. Biju and his family had 15 cents of land. They had been living in the house in Koombanpara for about ten years.
