
KANNUR: A man has been sentenced to three life terms in the case of hacking his wife, a police officer, to death. He hacked his wife Divyasree of Paliyeri in Karivellur in Kannur. Divyasree was a civil police officer at Chandera Police Station in Kasaragod. K Rajesh of Peralam Kozhummal Kottoor is the accused. He gets three life terms of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh. The sentence was pronounced by principal sessions court judge K T Nisar Ahmed.
Three life sentences are rare. The court sentenced three life sentences in three sections and seven years in prison in one section. The sentences should be served together. Public Prosecutor K Ajith Kumar argued that the case should be considered as a rare case among the rare.
The incident happened on November 21, 2024 at around 6 pm. Divyasree was estranged from her husband Rajesh, an auto driver. Divyasree was staying in her own house. On the day of the incident, Rajesh came with a weapon, barged into her house and then hacked her on her neck and face. Her father Vasu, who came to prevent him, also sustained injuries on his hands and stomach. Divyasree died on the spot itself. The accused, who came on a bike, escaped after the attack. He withdrew money from the ATM and then went to a bar in Valapattanam to drink. The police, who came to know about it, arrested him from there.
Rajesh and Divyasree have a child. Their divorce case was under the consideration of the Kannur Family Court. On the morning of the incident, Divyasree appeared and informed the court that she was not interested in continuing the relationship. The police found that this led to the murder.
