KOTTAYAM: Amit Urang (23), a native of Assam, who murdered industrialist Vijayakumar and his wife Dr. Meera in Thiruvathukkal, was remanded by the court till May 8.
District Police Chief Shahul Hameed said that a custody application will be filed soon. Evidence was collected on Thursday morning at the shop in Kozhichanda and the lodge where Amit was staying.
The police also obtained footage of Amit carrying the CCTV DVR to destroy it after committing the murder. The footage clearly shows that Amit took the same route to reach his house and back. Police are also investigating two unknown women who bailed Amit out when he was arrested for theft.
Amit testified that Vijayakumar treated him like a slave. Vijayakumar did not give him 20 days' salary despite asking for it several times. This soon resulted in Amit stealing Vijayakumar’s mobile phone. He transferred the SIM card from the phone to his mobile and installed Google Pay. He transferred Rs 2.78 lakh from various bank accounts linked to the number.
Amit tried to return the money as per his wife’s instructions. However, the bank officials clarified that the money could not be transferred back as the police had registered a case. Amit promised to return the money after he was released from jail and pleaded with Vijayakumar to withdraw the case, but he refused.
Amit, while in jail, learned that his wife had suffered a miscarriage. This left him in rage, and he kept picturing Vijayakumar as the culprit responsible for all the tragedy. The district police chief said that the murder has no connection with the death of Vijayakumar's son.
